July 19 - Wessex Rose, Leighton Buzzard and Linslade

This morning we are to be leaving a bit later so we headed out into town.  On one side of the canal is the town of Linslade.  The main drag was very international with restaurants featuring cuisines from all over the world.

We followed a church tower until we eventually found the church, St Barnabas Parish Church.  As we wandered around the church the pastor came out in her full white robes and greeted us.  Apparently services were to start soon but she invited us to take our time and look around.  She indicated that the church was relatively new, having only been constructed in the 1830’s.

In front of the church we found a number of volunteers working on a lovely flower garden.  The paths and arbors had gone in only last year with most of the plantings going in early this year.  They were hand watering as they are having a drought.  The garden will look lovely when it has matured.

We then walked to the other side of the canal into Leighton Buzzard where headed down an interesting side street...

where we found another church, All Saints,

and a rather colorful and interesting main street...

At one end of the street was an old fire house station that is now a Pizza Express

and a tall “lantern” structure in the plaza in front.

Apparently there are a number of these around England (we saw one in London).  According to Sue they were constructed by Henry II for/because of/?? his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The walk back to the canal took us over a bridge with flower boxes full of brightly colored flowers.

By the time we returned to the canal the boat had left.  We figured we’d catch up with the boat at a lock, sooner or later.  The tow path along the canal was very shady and we had a lovely walk.

However, this section of the canal has very few locks so we walked quite a long ways before we found the boat.

We saw a swan family along the canal.

Once we boarded the boat we had a lovely time cruising.

Tonight we moored in Fenny Stratford.  We took a short walk into town but there wasn’t much to see besides the church.

As usual, David did a great job on dinner.
